Volunteer Opportunities - 2017 Season

Host Volunteers needed on the Common Roots Urban Farm between April and October to greet visitors and give information about the Common Roots project, while helping to complete some necessary farm tasks. This is a great way to meet people, and learn about urban agriculture from multiple angles. If you are friendly, approachable, excited to be outside every week and interested in food, gardening, farming and community development, please contact Berni Duda at 902- 473-4179 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

 Hosts:

 What Hosts Do:
Hosts are on the farm each afternoon from 3-6pm to answer visitors’ questions and give tours of the farm.  They help to take care of tasks on the farm such as general maintenance (weeding, picking up garbage, etc.) and maintain message boards, as well as the daily journal entry recording visitors and activities of the day. They are available to assist the public in registering for workshops and memberships and to accept gardening and plant donations and are expected to attend regular meetings.

Become a Host:
Common Roots Urban Farm will accept Host volunteer applications in March, train them in April and hope to keep them for the full season.  We accept 30 per year.  Should we lose a few of our Hosts, we will re-open the intake in July. Please note that volunteers are registered through Volunteer Services with Capital Health and are required to participate in a Criminal Records Check. The form costs $30 to complete, which will later be reimbursed to you.   If interested, we encourage you to get in touch with Berni Duda at 473-4179 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

Core:

We are blessed to have a Core Team through Capital Health’s Volunteer Services. They perform both inside and outside tasks and help us to organize everything from plotters to Hosts and beyond. They are our heavy lifters whose titles include Plot Coordinator, Host Coordinator, and Calendar Coordinator.
Become a Core Team member:
Contact Jayme Melrose, Project Coordinator for an interview to see if your skills, interests, and schedule fit with our needs right now.  If so, we will direct you to Volunteer Services with Capital Health for an interview and a Criminal Records Check. The form costs $30 to complete, which will later be reimbursed to you.

Drop-in:

Come by anytime the Hosts are there and see if you can lend a hand!  Fridays are our big work parties—a great time to work with many different people, finding what task you like best.
